"International cooperation benefits Global Health objectives."

On November 3rd, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Beijing hosted a scientific lecture and dialogue at the German Centre in Beijing. The topic of discussion was “The Role of International Collaboration in Global Health Initiatives with a Focus on Immunology.” The event emphasized the significance of Sino-German cooperation.

Professor Michael Kirschfink is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Heidelberg and serves as the Head of the Laboratory of Immunochemistry at the Institute of Immunology, University of Heidelberg. Since 1994, Prof. Kirschfink has been dedicated to fostering Sino-German cooperation and exchange. During his lecture, he provided an overview of the collaborative efforts in immunology between the University of Heidelberg and the Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). He also discussed initiatives like the Chinese-German Cooperation Group in Tumor Immunology (DFG/NRFC) and the Sino-German Consortium on Medical Research and Education. Additionally, Prof. Kirschfink highlighted cooperative endeavors at both governmental and business levels between China and Germany.

Dr. Yang Dongliang is a highly esteemed figure in the field of medicine, holding the titles of Professor, Chief Physician, and Doctoral Supervisor at Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). He also serves as the Director of the Sino-German International Joint Laboratory of Viral Infection and Immunity, and the Director of the Hubei International Cooperation Base of Infection and Immunity. During his lecture, he shared his experiences regarding Sino-German cooperation in the fight against infectious diseases, drawing from his own extensive work in the field. Prof. Yang emphasized that Tongji Medical College has established long-term collaborations with 25 universities and medical institutions in Germany, including the University of Heidelberg and the University of Duisburg-Essen. The cooperation between China and Germany in the research and treatment of infectious diseases has yielded fruitful results. Through initiatives such as seminars, lectures, exchange programs, and joint training programs, the close partnership between Tongji Medical College and German counterparts has provided an expansive platform for research, strengthening the international network of research cooperation between the two nations.

The event also included an interactive dialogue session to actively engage the participants.

Mr. Halldor Berg was moderating the discussion session and the two professors were engaged in a lively discussion with the audience.  

These two professors are pioneers and practitioners of Sino-German cooperation in the field of immunology. Their insights and practical experiences shared during the event were invaluable. It became evident that international cooperation plays a crucial role in the sharing of information and resources, ultimately contributing to the advancement of global health initiatives. We feel honored to have witnessed these two professors, representing the exceptional talents of China and Germany, who have made significant contributions to global health initiatives.
