DAAD Scholarship Programmes
for Ph.D. Studies in Germany 2007
(in cooperation with the China Scholarship Council)
The DAAD offers in cooperation with the China Scholarship Council (CSC) financial support for individuals who would like to carry out a PhD research project at a German higher education institution or non-university research institute. Grants are available to graduate students with a master’s degree and PhD candidates from both universities and research institutes in China and are open to all disciplines.
Scholarship types
The Research grants can be used to carry out
- research projects at a German higher education institution for the purpose of gaining a doctorate in China ("DAAD Sandwich Scholarship")
- research projects at a German higher education institution for the purpose of gaining a doctorate in Germany

Target group |
Chinese PhD candidates who will carry out a research project in Germany with the purpose of gaining a doctorate in China
(Candidates who have begun their PhD research
in 2005 or 2006 will be prefered.) |
Chinese holders of a master’s degree who wish to carry out a PhD research in Gemany with the purpose of gaining a German doctoral degree.
Note: Support for a full doctoral programme in Germany is primarily provided in areas with insufficient research or academic supervision opportunities in China. |

Application procedure
Applications have to be submitted in parallel both to DAAD Beijing Office and to the CSC Office in Beijing.
The deadline at the CSC Office is April 15 2006. For detailed information please refer to www.csc.edu.cn.
The deadline at the DAAD Beijing Office is June 15 2006.
The following documents must be be submitted to DAAD Beijing Office in triplicate (1 set of originals or notarised copies, 2 sets of copies thereof). Documents in Chinese always have to be provided together with a certificated translation.

For applicants for Sandwich scholarship in addition:
- admission to PhD-studies in China
Incomplete applications or applications sent to the DAAD head office in Bonn will not be taken into account.
General application procedure
- Qualified candidates will be invited to an interview with a joint selection committee of DAAD and CSC and made up of Chinese and German Professors in November 2006. The interview language will be English or German. Decisions will be announced in early 2007.
- Successful applicants will start a compulsory German language training in March 2007. For candidates from the natural sciences and engineering the length of the German language training is one semester, for candidates from the humanities and social sciences the length of the language training is two semesters, i.e. the research stay in Germany will beginn in summer 2007 (natural sciences and engineering) or early 2008 (humanities and social sciences), respectively.
